Sofia Coppla Opens Secret Door

The last time Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst worked together, they brought us Marie Antoinette, which arrived to mixed reviews and unspectacular box office. So the pair – who first collaborated on Coppola’s debut, The Virgin Suicides – will no doubt be hoping for better results with their next reunion, the just-announced project called Secret Door.

The plot right now is a mystery, and even that title could change, since it might well be a working name for the project (though given that Coppola’s last film, Somewhere, ended up released with its working title as its actual name, it may just stick with it).

According to the tweet from Coppola’s father’s company American Zoetrope, which will be backing the film in its early stages, the script is still being finished. It offered no details as to what Dunst will be playing other than the fact that she accepted an unspecified role.

A hit tip here to the keen eyes of the gang at The Playlist, who spotted the tweet and speculated that the title doesn’t seem to relate to any of the projects Coppola had bubbling away, so hopefully this is something new and intriguing from the Lost in Translation writer/director.

Update! In response to the news, Coppola herself decided to release some script pages for the film, which we now know is set in 1940s Paris and finds a young actress, Luna (the role Dunst may well play), another young woman, Calanthe, and a seemingly suicidal man, Jolette. That's about it for now, but it's certainly a good tease...
