With a little help from fellow Drag Race beauties Raja and Manila Luzon, Carmen Carrera celebrated her birthday by nearly performing in her birthday suit (or as Carmen calls it, her "every day suit") at Escuelita in NYC on Saturday night. The better version of Daisy Fuentes prowled the stage and moved her mouth lips to the music as her down low kibbles and bits lost all oxygen, turned blue and fell off out of the back. Being the consummate professional showgirl that she is, Carmen subtlety kicked it off stage and made a mental note to tuck a tiny oxygen tank up in there next time so her peen doesn't pass out. No, seriously, I don't expect a queen to divulge all her tuck game secrets, but does bitch have a trap door taint?! Even Barbie's crotch isn't as smooth as Carmen's and she doesn't have dick (I think)!

I'm not even going to try to solve the mystery of Carmen's trompe l'oeil chocha, because I don't even know where to begin. Instead, I'm going to use my energy to write to the International Olympic Committee and demand that they add tucking to their list of events!

The Costume Institute Gala is a week away and Alexander McQueen is reportedly finishing up dress fittings on a number of women today. Usually, there are no previews of the dresses to be worn until they hit the event's red carpet, but this year is an exception.

Prabal Gurung worked with Elettra Wiedemann Rossellini to rework one of her grandmother Ingrid Bergman's dresses, made by postwar Roman couturiere Fernanda Gattinoni. Originally, the gown was floorlength ruched ivory chiffon with bands of rhinestone and sequined embroidery running down each side, but Gurung reoriented the embroidery and shortened the dress in the back, leaving the original dresses chiffon back panels in place (left). Wiedemann explained that they aimed to “maintain the integrity of the dress but also make it mine and his. I felt it was important to pay homage to my grandmother but put my own stamp on it. It’s still the same dress, but it feels a little bit sexier, more contemporary, and younger.” A picture of the original can be seen here.

What is it about weddings that makes them such gratuitously style-free zones? Oh, I know: everything. If I had my way, I would abstain from all further reference to the subject here. But I feel honour bound to proffer a solution beyond "don't do it!"

So, obviously, number one: don't do it. Matrimony being unfashionable per se. However, if you or those around you must have recourse to the institution, there are ways of making the entire thing less excruciating.

For starters, do it in winter - something that Brits especially would be wise to consider. The Queen did this, and very nice she looked too in her ration-card Hartnell. Winter nuptials score dependable weather, a somewhat less tawdry, un-Tango'd bride, and guests in stockings, coats and furs - plus a veil of darkness to cover the entire event. This, in style terms, must be considered a result.

What to wear to a wedding

As a bride, it is possible - though not customary - not to resemble a lumbering style crisis. My old mucker Lorraine Candy, of Planet Fashion's Elle magazine, found herself so amused by my gamophobia (fear of marriage) that she once sent me to haute nuptial hot spot Brown's Bride ( www.brownsbride.com ). Naturally, I came out in hives amid £12,000 of tulle.

But Browns is so tremulously chic that even a refusenik such as myself found something to swoon over: a slinky, Marilyn Monroe-esque virgin/whore Monique Lhuillier number, the price of which was roughly that of a first home. Unless one is six-years-old, the key axiom would appear to be this: pick a style that you might feasibly sport in colour for another, smart but non-nuptial, occasion.

My friend Lucky purchased the most ravishing Ginger Rogers creation for £120 on eBay. Fashionista Emma favoured an off-the-peg 200-quid dress on the basis that it would presently be covered in rioja and cigarette burns, and so it came to pass (Monsoon, Coast, Phase Eight and Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti are all thoughts).

Pals Michelle and Rainy took my advice (fancy!) and headed to the woman I am proud to call my dressmaker: Covent Garden's demi-couturier, Sylvia Young of Beau Monde ( www.beaumonde.uk.com ). Sylves is the genius to whom Voguettes scurry for spousal frockage, and who never, but never hoicks up the price because it's a wedding.

Rainy has allowed me to say that her beaded lace sheath cost £300, plus £800 for material from couture fabric purveyors and Royal Appointment holders Joel & Son (www.joelandsonfabrics.com).

As a guest, the key is to refuse all invitations to be a bridesmaid and sport something that you love, not something you deem appropriate. Harbour no fears about upstaging the bride à la Elizabeth Hurley, metallic pant-flashing at Henry Dent-Brocklehurst's post-nuptials knees-up in 1998 or, doubtless, one V Beckham next Friday. A bride with any sense will welcome the heat being taken off her - and it gives the other guests something to carp about.

A spring coat will pull everything together nicely. Should funds allow, Red Valentino's marabou-bedecked, fuchsia satin show-stopper sets an appropriate satirical tone ( www.net-a-porter.com , £985) - which is not to say that I don't really, really want one. Sister of the bride, don it and never be forgiven. LKB's Audrey coat (now £145, www.lkbennett.com ) is a less frou-frou take on the hue. Hobbs's silver wool/silk Aquarius (£269, www.hobbs.co.uk ), cornflower Newbury (now £99), or fitted, navy, polka-dot Dover Rainmac (£139) might also prove more conciliatory.

Even if said bash is in the wilds, hang on to a small vestige of sophistication by stepping out in a pair of hot-as-Hades heels: Moschino's jaunty co-respondents, say (£250, www.mywardrobe.com ). Unless the coming week yields a snow flurry (one can but hope), one is probably talking bare legs. In a reversal of past practice, it is hosiery that is now infra dig at such events, unless one is a Windsor - something to do with blue blood and veins.

Fascinators should be considered out of bounds. The tipping point was Ms Middleton-of-the-Road herself; and now it's show over, nothing to see - until some Hoxtonite rediscovers parodic ones, which I expect will be some time around Bank Holiday Monday.

I will, however, permit you to wear a Vivien Sheriff cocktail hat ( www.viviensheriff.co.uk ). Or why not adopt some trusty old ensemble plus a Philip Treacy titfer in the manner of Camilla ( www.philiptreacy.co.uk )? You will require a hatbox for when the descent into Viking raid-style revelry begins later: the American site www.vintagehatbox.com has some sterling one-offs (hats and boxes), all of them cheap as chips.

A stupendous cocktail ring will be a means of proclaiming, to all who understand the polyalphabetic substitution cipher of girl-to-girl semiology: "Yo, sister, by refusing the bondage of matrimony I remain free to choose my own accessories rather than the sub-Ratner tat you are now forced to sport for the rest of your days. Still, congratulations and all that."

SARAH BURTON has reiterated Alexander McQueen's attention to detail, unique vision and sense of originality, as she recalls some of his most well known collections. Burton is currently one of fashion's most talked about figures, having been tipped to design Kate Middleton's wedding dress, as well as being the latest name in the frame for the Dior job.

"The [autumn/winter 2006-07] collection was about the 1745 massacre of the Scottish Jacobites by the English, which Lee felt so passionately about because of his Scottish family heritage, which his mother had researched," she explains. "The women were the widows of the slaughtered army. This dress was actually based on my wedding dress - I got married two years earlier. We had to figure out how to make lace work in the round with those ruffles because Lee hated gathering. So we cut out all of the flowers from the lace and reappliquéd it on tulle to make our own fabric. This is the collection most people remember as the one with Kate Moss in a hologram. Oh, my God, it was so beautiful. He loved that show."

In honour of the Met's new tribute exhibition to McQueen - Savage Beauty - the designer, spoke of how her former boss impressively wove his seasonal themes into every aspect of his collection.

"So much of the [spring/summer 2001-02] show was about the collective madness of the world. It was presented in a two-way mirrored glass box in London, and the girls had bandaged heads, acting like inmates of a mental asylum," Burton tells US Vogue. "Lee wanted the top of this dress to be made from surgical slides used for hospital specimens, which we found in a medical-supply shop on Wigmore Street. Then we hand-painted them red, drilled holes in each one, and sewed them on so they looked like paillettes. We hand-painted white ostrich feathers and dip-dyed each one to layer in the skirt."

PROFESSOR Richard Weston is perhaps fashion's most unexpected new design star, having been recently snapped up by iconic British store Liberty - through its new reality television series, The Next Big Thing. Weston, who is also professor of architecture at Cardiff University, impressed buyers with his range of unique scarves - which are based on scans of minerals, fossils and stones, which he finds near his home in Cardiff. His students are still struggling with his new-found fashion status.

I suspect most are bemused - a middle-aged, overweight professor with higgledy-piggledy teeth is the antithesis of designer-stereotypes," he tells us. "I was recognised in Oxford Street the day after the first episode of The Next Big Thing went out - I wore the same 'Mica' shirt to give people a fighting chance! And I think the students are beginning to realise that something is happening, the scope of which they can't quite grasp. Nor, perhaps, can I."

Aside from his academic pursuits, Weston is also widely known in literary circles for writing Alvar Aalto - a book dedicated to the Finnish architect and designer, which won 1995's Sir Banister Fletcher Prize as the architecture book of the year. Weston says his love of pattern has been long-standing.

"I'm known in architecture as a writer but I've always been intensely visual and in love with colour," he tells us. "My first year tutor was an extraordinary Iranian who saw 'architecture' as embracing visual order in nature, buildings, everything. I've got lots of books about natural forms and patterns, Islamic tiling, rugs, fabrics, etc., and the 'decorative', mostly French, painters whose work I particularly love - for example Matisse, Bonnard and Vuillard."

The professor admits venturing into fashion has been a far cry from his day job, but he's enjoying the experience.

"So far it has been an almost unalloyed pleasure - getting in had its frustrations, but the fast-moving world of fashion and sensual delights of high-end retail are a welcome contrast to Britain's under-funded and over-audited universities," he says.

With his scarves collection proving a hit, Weston's label looks set for expansion.

"I sponsored a project called 'Frocks from Rocks' with Newport University's fashion students, with promising results, and Liza Bruce has used some for swimwear (I met her husband by chance in a mineral shop)," he says. "I have no delusions about becoming a new Karl Lagerfeld however! I'm looking to work with designers who share my passion for the prints."

Kristin Cavallari has designed a pair of shoes for charity.

The former 'Laguna Beach' star has teamed up with footwear firm Shoe Dazzle to create the floral-print wedges, which she has named 'Bardot' and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to her charity OneKid One World.

She said: "Partnering with ShoeDazzle has given me the opportunity to join two of my loves, fashion and charity work! I've enjoyed the process of designing this unique shoe that really matches my style and personality."

The shoe goes on sale on May 16.

Krsitin announced the collaboration last year and said she was hoping it would be the start of her fashion designing career for her.

She said: "I'm designing a shoe for Shoe Dazzle right now, which is like a one time, one deal show which a portion of the proceeds will go to my charity OneKid OneWorld.

"I'm excited about that because I want to have my own shoe line so it'll be like a good first show to get my feet wet with.

"Shoes are my number one thing."

ROLAND MOURET'S collection makes its first major appearance on a magazine cover this month - and the London-based designer isn't starting small: Reese Witherspoon wears a top from his spring/summer 2011 offering on the cover of US Vogue's May issue.

"I was so surprised when I saw that it was on the cover," Mouret told us. "Of course we knew they may shoot the piece, but honestly I thought the cover was mostly about advertisers so it was really a surprise."

Witherspoon, who married fiancé Jim Toth last month, has worn Mouret before - and the designer is a fan of her straightforward style.

"We have dressed Reese four or five times before and she's really loyal," Mouret said. "She's not pretentious about clothes, she just thinks they should do their job."

The cover, which is inspired by the Oscar-winner's latest film Water For Elephants, has a Thirties circus theme which also appeals to Mouret.

"I loved this kind of Thirties attitude she has on the cover," he said. "The depression period and the circus theme is an amazing mix. The picture has a really genuine attitude - it's a mix of boyish beauty with extreme glamour; a really complex beauty. The top shows the kind of simple draping I was doing before the Galaxy dress mixed with more structure. I love the picture."

CINDY CRAWFORD believes modelling has changed since her career began - and that she no longer feels a part of it.

"I do feel like an outsider now, but I just saw the CoverGirl commercial with Taylor Swift and I thought, 'Wow, it is so hard for models to get a job these days.' You have to sing and act, too," she says. "There doesn't seem to be as much work specifically just for models. And I also think when I was modelling, size 6 was a normal size and now it's like 2 or 0. I don't look the same as I did 20 years ago, nor should I. Sometimes I get that little pang, like 'Oh, bummer, I wish I did.' But at the same time, I see my children and I see them growing up and I look at my husband and the marriage that we've worked on and have together, and if all that is good and working, it's a lot easier to be kind to your little fine lines or where gravity's gotten the better of you."

Crawford recently appeared in an advert with her two children, nine-year-old Kaia and 11-year-old Presley.

"Originally, I didn't want to use my kids in the commercial because I don't ever want to make them feel like they have to work because they might be in a bad mood that day or they might want to have a play date," she tells Parade. "I don't ever want to say, 'Well sorry, you're booked.'"

However, Kaia and Presley managed to persuade their famous mum that they rather liked the idea of doing a model turn.

"The night before the commercial, they heard my husband and I talking and they heard that we were having 'fake' kids. They were like, 'You can't have fake kids! You have to have us!' So at the last minute, they ended up doing it," she says.

When she met David Lauren on a rainy New York night in April of 2004, the last thing on model Lauren Bush’s mind was how their names might sound together if they married. On top of that, she launched an eco-friendly clothing line, Lauren Pierce Atelier, in 2008, as well. So where does she get her passion for fashion? CINDY CRAWFORD has admitted that even supermodels can have trouble with their love lives - especially where children are involved.

"We had our door locked and we never lock our bedroom door and our daughter comes... She's like, 'What are you doing in there?'" Crawford said. "I said, 'You know what, Daddy and I are spending some time together,' and then she was like, 'Oh God! I don't want to know that!' Now, she knows if the door is closed and locked, don't."

The Vogue cover girl - who has a son, Presley, aged 11, and a daughter, Kaia, aged nine, with husband Rande Gerber - also revealed that the couple have a special date night spot.

DONATELLA VERSACE isn't worried about competition from celebrities launching their own designer fashion lines.

"I think it is more a question of marketing," she says. "Some of these collections are for cheaper, mass market fashion. I don't think that creativity is there."

The 55-year-old says it's important for designers to take inspiration from as many different sources as they can find.

"You need to live among real things, you need as much information as possible," she tells Reuters.
