Even before she checked herself into a rehabilitation center for "physical and emotional issues" last November, Demi Lovato was open about the pain she'd faced at the hands of tormentors during her childhood.

Lovato, 18, says she was bullied constantly by classmates until she left school to finish her studies at home. In an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts (via Us Magazine), Lovato said, "I literally didn't know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, 'Well, you're fat.' I was bullied because I was fat. And then a few months later I developed an eating disorder, and that's kind of what I've been dealing with ever since."

Lovato has had issues with food for a decade, starting with compulsive overeating at the age of 8. In other interviews, she has acknowledged that her eating disorder is something she'll have to confront for the rest of her life.

Demi Lovato says that while in a treatment facility for an eating disorder and issues with cutting, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

The former Disney star told People.com:

“I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar. … Looking back it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5:30 in the morning.”

This news comes nearly a week after Demi was throwing her support behind another celebrity struggling with the same disorder.

Demi expressed her concern for Catherine Zeta-Jones, who checked into a mental health facility to receive treatment for bipolar II disorder but has since been released, tweeting:

“I don’t know Catherine Zeta-Jones personally but what she has decided to do it SO brave.. And SO difficult but worth it… I’m proud of her.”

Prior to her admittance of having bipolar disorder, Demi’s chatted Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts Wednesday, disclosing how getting bullied led to an eating disorder and bouts with cutting. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.”

Her mother was a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and country music recording artist; her father moved to New Mexico after their marriage ended in 1994. Lovato earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in April 2009. She began playing piano at the age of seven.

"I basically had a nervous breakdown," Demi said about what prompted her to enter a treatment facility late last year. "I wanted freedom from the inner demons. I wanted to start my life over." It's not easy to talk about such a sensitive subject in private, let alone with the entire world watching. But Demi seems to be doing it gracefully, and she's becoming a great role model in the process. Bravo.
